নিজস্ব প্রতিবেদনঃ দার্জিলিং পাহাড়, সিকিম সহ উত্তরবঙ্গের গ্রামীণ পর্যটনের প্রসার,হোম স্টের প্রসার এবং অর্কিড চাষীদের উৎসাহিত করতে শিলিগুড়ি সিটি সেন্টারে আগামী ১৪ ও ১৫ এপ্রিল অনুষ্ঠিত হতে চলেছে অর্কিড উৎসব। এসোসিয়েশন অফ কনজারভেশন এন্ড ট্যুরিজম এই উৎসবের আয়োজন করছে বলে সংস্থার কর্মকর্তা তথা বিশিষ্ট ভ্রমন গবেষক 
রাজ বসু জানিয়েছেন। তিনি আরও জানিয়েছেন,সিকিম, কালিম্পং অর্কিড চাষের জন্য বিখ্যাত। গোটা ভারতে ১১৫৬ প্রজাতির অর্কিড রয়েছে। এরমধ্যে ৬১২ প্রজাতির অর্কিড রয়েছে অরুনাচল প্রদেশে, ৫৬০ প্রজাতির অর্কিড সিকিমে এবং ৪৭৯ প্রজাতির অর্কিড রয়েছে বাংলার হিমালয় অববাহিকা অঞ্চলে।অর্কিডের জন্য কালিম্পং এর নাম রয়েছে বিশ্ব জুড়ে। প্রায় দু’শ বছর ধরে কালিম্পং এর অর্কিড বিদেশে রপ্তানি হয়ে আসছে। এই অর্কিডকে ঘিরেই দার্জিলিং পাহাড়, সিকিম এলাকায় পর্যটনের 
আরও বিকাশ হতে পারে। তার সঙ্গে হোম স্টেরও প্রসার হতে পারে। তাই শিলিগুড়িতে বৈশাখ অর্কিড উৎসব অনুষ্ঠিত হতে চলেছে বলে জানিয়েছেন রাজ বসু ছাড়াও রমেশ পান্ডে, রিতেশ কোহলি। এসোসিয়েশন অফ কনজারভেশন এন্ড ট্যুরিজম অতীতে আম, কমলা এবং ধান উৎসব করেছিল শিলিগুড়িতে। এবার অর্কিড উৎসব। রাজ বসু বলেছেন, এই উৎসবের মাধ্যমে অর্কিড চাষীদেরও আরও উৎসাহিত করা যাবে।

Why orchids: Today this region of North Bengal and Sikkim is evolving as a major orchid cultivation area, a phenomenon which was initiated in 2012-13. Naturally, India has recorded a presence of 1156 species of orchids, among which 612 species have been counted in Arunachal Pradesh,560 in Sikkim & 479 in Bengal Himalayan areas.
Among, all flowers, historically orchids are known to be of the most special demand and Kalimpong’s orchid exports are known to be almost 200 years old. Out of the 388 species endemic to India, 260 are in Eastern Himalaya and Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspots. There was a time when orchids exported through Kalimpong were tissue cultured in Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand etc to increase farm based cultivation and export. Now the varieties of Dendrobium, Phalaenopsis, Oncidium, Cymbidium and others which are cultivated mainly come as tissue cultures from the different countries and are grown vigorously by our growers from North Bengal and Sikkim.
Other than the beautiful “Orchid & Rhododendron trails” of East Himalaya, there are Orchid homestays which facilitate training in orchid learning and growing for visitors.
To have better access to the National & International market, both for cultivators and Tourism stakeholders, this first of its kind of Festival is being organized.
There will be Orchid & other flower growers exhibiting their colours, tourism stakeholders highlighting rural tourism & homestays from Orchid areas, handicrafts & handlooms from East & Northeast India, interesting food options and several cultural performances to welcome the New Year.Also 10 years anniversary of City Centre will be celebrated as the first mega Mall of North Bengal & Sikkim with more than 7 lakh sq feet and more than 700 brands in service.
ACT, Association for Conservation & Tourism, who has celebrated Rurality of the region through mangoes, oranges & rice in the past, now initiates orchids as the pride of the people.
Members present at the Press Meet today are: Ramesh Pandey & Ritesh Kohli from Ambuja Neotia, Kolkata, Raj Basu from ACT. Raj Basu introduced about the Festival, Ramesh Pandey said that he was proud to work with ACT introducing the several Rural communities and activities, especially Rural Tourism.
